Chiefs Preseason: Rookie Standouts, Injury Setbacks, & What’s Next for KC!
What a whirlwind 24 hours in Chiefs Kingdom! We’ve got a mix of news from our preseason opener, covering gridiron action, tough injury updates, and a dazzling rookie debut. It’s never a dull moment with our beloved Chiefs, and as always, we’re here to break it all down with the fan perspective you crave!
Preseason Opener: Learning, Not Losing!
The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off their preseason slate with a narrow 20-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Now, we all know preseason results don’t define a season, but there were some absolutely electrifying moments that gave us a glimpse of what’s to come! Our boys started with a bang, with cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace scooping up a fumble on the opening kickoff – talk about setting the tone! That quick turnover led directly to a classic Patrick Mahomes one-yard touchdown pass to the promising Jason Brownlee. Even though it was short, that connection already looked crisp!
Beyond the starters, we saw some promising play from new faces. Quarterback Gardner Minshew looked solid under center, completing 6 of 9 passes and even scrambling for a two-yard touchdown of his own. And let’s not forget the leg of our man, Harrison Butker, who absolutely drilled a 58-yard field goal. His reliability continues to be a massive asset!

Heartbreaking Blow to the Secondary: Deon Bush Out for the Season
Unfortunately, not all news from the preseason opener was positive. In a truly gut-wrenching development, veteran defensive back Deon Bush suffered a torn Achilles tendon. Head coach Andy Reid himself confirmed the severity, and this injury will require surgery, sidelining Bush for the entire 2025 season. This is a significant blow to our secondary depth, especially given Bush’s veteran presence and versatility. Our thoughts are with Deon for a full and speedy recovery – we know he’ll be back stronger!

Rookie Revelation: Josh Simmons Shines in Debut!
But amidst the tough injury news, there was a definite ray of sunshine that emerged from the preseason opener: rookie left tackle Josh Simmons! Tasked with the monumental job of protecting the blindside, Simmons delivered an impressive debut. In just 11 snaps, he showed enough promise to make Chiefs Kingdom buzz about him potentially being the long-term solution we’ve been seeking at left tackle. His performance was widely highlighted as a key takeaway from the game, and we’re incredibly excited to see how he develops!
