The Chiefs Are Ignoring Their Biggest Problem, and Chris Jones Is Fed Up
Let’s stop beating around the bush. The Kansas City Chiefs are 3-3, and they look nothing like the team that should have been competing for a three-peat. They’re getting pushed around, bullied in the trenches, and they’re letting teams run all over them. And while the talking heads want to blame the offense or the schedule, the real problem is staring us right in the face. It’s a problem so obvious that the best player on the defense had to come out and say it himself.
“Everything… We’ve got to get my brother back.”
That was Chris Jones, the All-Pro, the monster in the middle, talking about what this team misses without veteran nose tackle Mike Pennel. He didn’t mince words. He didn’t hide behind coach-speak. He sent a clear message to the front office: you messed up.
A Run Defense in Shambles
Still don’t believe me? Let’s look at the tale of the tape. This season, the Chiefs’ run defense has been suspect at best and downright embarrassing at worst. While they currently rank a respectable 11th in points against, that doesn’t tell the whole story. In their three losses, they’ve given up an average of over 26 points per game. You can’t win in this league when your defense is that generous.
Remember the good old days of last season? When the Chiefs’ defense was a brick wall in the playoffs? A huge part of that was the late-season acquisition of Mike Pennel. He came in and did the dirty work. He ate up double teams, stuffed the run, and freed up guys like Chris Jones to do what they do best: wreck the game. Pennel wasn’t a flashy player, but he was a necessary one. He was the anchor this defense needed.
The Front Office’s Arrogance
So what happened? The Chiefs’ front office got complacent. They let Pennel walk, assuming they could plug in some younger, cheaper player and get the same results. That’s not how you win championships. You win with tough, smart, veteran players who know their role. You win with guys like Mike Pennel.
And now, the consequences are clear. The Chiefs are a .500 football team, and their superstar defensive tackle is having to publicly campaign for reinforcements. It’s a slap in the face to the leaders in that locker room. It’s a sign that the front office has lost touch with what this team needs to win.
It’s Time to Listen to “Stone Cold” Jones
The solution is simple. It’s staring Brett Veach right in the face. Pick up the phone, admit you made a mistake, and bring Mike Pennel back. Give Chris Jones the help he’s asking for. Give this defense the anchor it so desperately needs. The season is not lost, but the margin for error is shrinking. The Chiefs can still turn this thing around, but it starts with fixing the problem in the middle. It’s time to bring back the “Big Pennel” energy to this defense. Before it’s too late.
